High School Preview! Patterns of Power:Teaching Grammar Through Reading and Writing, 9-12

  • Led by authors Travis Leech and Holly Durham, this workshop is designed for those who teach or support grades 9-12. Meaning is made when reading and writing crash together in the conventions of language. Explore ways to harness the language conventions to purposefully activate meaning in both comprehension and composition. Let’s move the conventions of language from being viewed as right and wrong to seeing them as providing meaning and effect. Let’s move from test practice to best practice that prepares students for any writing challenge, multiple choice or otherwise. Let’s move toward brain-based, practical ways to use the reading-writing connection to teach grammar and editing in a way that grows high school writers and readers.

Jeff Anderson

For more than thirty years, Jeff has inspired writers and teachers of grades K-8 with the power and joy of the writing process. He has written ten books and five kits for Stenhouse Publishers: Mechanically Inclined, Everyday Editing, 10 Things Every Writer Needs to Know, Revision Decisions (coauthored with Dr. Deborah Dean of BYU), Patterns of Power: Inviting Young Writers into the Conventions of Language, Grades 1-5 (with Whitney La Rocca), Patterns of Power: en español (with his former 4th grade student, Caroline Sweet, and Whitney La Rocca), Patterns of Power Plus Grades 1, 2, 3, 4, and 5. Patterns of Power: Inviting Adolescent Writers into the Conventions of Language, Grades 6-8 (with Travis Leech and Melinda Clark), and his latest, co-authored with Whitney La Rocca, Patterns of Wonder: Inviting Emergent Writers to Play with the Conventions of Language (Summer 2021). He also writes middle-grade novels, including Sterling’s Zack Delacruz series: Me and My Big Mouth, Just My Luck, and Upstaged. Jeff grew up in Austin, Texas, where he fell in love with writing while journaling and sharing stories he’d written to entertain his friends on the phone. As a staff developer and demonstration teacher, Jeff says, "I love the ability to spark curiosity and creativity and to support people in finding their voices. That's pure joy." In his free time, Jeff walks his dog, Carl, or sits on the deck with his partner, Terry. When he's not doing that, he meditates or reads—his latest addiction is nonfiction.









Holly Durham

Holly has worked in various roles in public education, serving students, teachers, and administrators. She began her career in 1992, teaching middle school English in a small town outside of Baton Rouge, Louisiana. She moved to Houston, Texas in 1997 to teach high school English. Throughout her career, she has assumed numerous roles, some while she was also teaching and others after leaving the classroom: Advanced Placement Curriculum Coordinator, Instructional Coach, English and Social Studies Director, Professional Learning Coordinator as well as her current role as a Director of Accountability and District Improvement Planning in Fort Bend ISD. With this variety of roles, Holly has training and experiences in literacy as well as in leadership, federal and state policy, accountability, and coaching for both teachers and administrators.

Holly has presented literacy, technology, and coaching training since 2010 at numerous local and regional venues, as well as larger conferences such as SXSWEdu. Only recently has Holly begun to write. She is a co-author of Patterns of Power, Grades 9–12 and is excited to shift into writing and supporting teachers beyond the district where she works.

Holly lives in Houston, Texas with her husband and two children. She is a lover of dogs and graphic novels. In her free time, she experiments in the kitchen and on the grill, writes, and exercises.


Travis Leech

Travis Leech, coauthor of Patterns of Power: Inviting Adolescent Writers into the Conventions of Language, grew up loving to read and spiral notebooks with stories of fantasy and adventure. He never enjoyed grammar instruction in school, and was never top of his class at diagramming sentences or finding the 10 mistakes in paragraphs riddled with errors. As he began his teaching career in middle school English Language Arts, he was fortunate to find Jeff Anderson’s books Mechanically Inclined and Everyday Editing, teaching him a new way of grammar instruction: inviting students to notice, discuss, and practice grammar seen in “the wild,” that is, high-quality writing of published young adult authors. He has since incorporated the ideas of Anderson’s grammar invitations into his work as a middle school teacher, gifted and talented specialist, and now instructional coach in San Antonio, TX. In his free time, Leech enjoys learning and testing out new recipes, reading, connecting with family virtually, and exploring the Texas Hill Country and beyond with his wife Keri and their dog. He currently lives in San Antonio, TX.
